Solutions to guiding questions

The elderly have difficulty pouring water, so I made this tumbler (不倒翁) so that they only have to push it.

P.S. I exported it from the model itself, that's why the resolution is so bad.

If it does not load, then just drag it out to your desktop, then open it from there. You should be able to access it if you have google sketchup installed.

Ergonomics and Anthropometry Part 1

1. Compare the two types of setup and state reasons why one of the setup is preferred.
2. What are the area of considerations when designing a conducive and comfortable workplace?
3. State the reasons why these considerations are important.

1. There is one where the table is piled full of files and there is minimal space for the occupant. The other is designed more ergonomically than the other one by using space-efficient and innovative devices.

2. They are -comfort
-accessibility to objects
-lighting
-space(movement)
-long time periods of laptop use
-desk space

3. They are the factors that will affect the amount of work the occupant produces, his concentration span, his attitude, etc.

P.S. I wish I had a desk like that too!(the ergonomic one!)

Classroom Work Desk Wait! there's background music! P.s. Go fullscreen

This time I added a desk under it! And I also added some background music. And, as usual, I always end with Smart Innovations : Making Life easier and that stick with light(it represents innovation!)

The Mac Worktable design

This is my worktable for the Mac.

When used as a worktable, the triangular support can be folded out by the axle, the long round thing with the support. The handles can be folded in.

When carried, the handles are folded out and the triangular support is folded in.(ref. to 2nd model.

Lastly, in compact mode (not shown), everything is folded in, to make a flat slab of metal.

Elderly Challenge Assignment 3

I decided to make a video instead of using pictures 'cause it makes the layout clearer. I used the animation function in Google Sketchup. Yeah... I think that's it.

So... the stuff that I made specially for the elderly:

1. The ramp
Okay... maybe it wasn't so obvious in the video. So you can pause it and I believe that you will be able to see it.

2. The caretaker
You know... the room without the wheelchair but with the guy inside. Okay, the guys are just marks. The elderly won't look like that. Maybe the caretaker would? Never mind. So the kitchen is for the caretaker...? 'Cause I think that the kitchen tabletop is too tall for the elderly in a wheelchair. And also the caretaker will be helping the elderly to shift from his wheelchair to the sofa or a chair at the dining table.

3. The toilet
In the toilet, there is a toilet bowl. I know that is very obvious, but what I am focusing on is the, handlebars? or hand rails? So that the elderly can support themselves to sit onto the toilet bowl, or caretaker (because I am not saying that they will still be strong enough to support themselves).

4. The windows
Most of the windows (except for those first two, located in the caretaker's room), are the sliding type with a handle, the kind that go inward instead of sticking out, so that the elderly will find it easier to open the windows as it slides instead of opening outwards, so that the elderly does not have to stretch his/her arm.

So, yeah... I think that's it. FOR REAL!

Elderly Challenge - Observation 4

As you can see, the old lady has just come back from the wet market and is towing along a trolley of groceries. More unhealthy elderly will not be capable of such actions and therefore need others to help them. So, we must be understanding and help those who need it.

However, there are also some elderly who are in need of help but feel that the action of receiving help is an insult to their dignity. That's why we should not try agitate them after we have realised that.

We must be able to identify those who need help and those that we can help.

ThE eNd!

Elderly Challenge - Observation 3

As you can see in this video, the elderly man is having problems walking as he is moving with a shuffling gait, step by step. He cannot walk big steps.

Later, he ascends the steps pretty quickly, although not as fast as a normal person.

I feel that such elderly people can do quite well for themselves, but there are other elderly that have much more serious mobility problems than this senior. We must therefore help these much more physically challenged elderly, being much more mobile than them.

Part 1: Understanding the 'The Elderly Challenge'

1 a) Housing for the elderly
Singapore should be a place that makes the elderly feel at home and encourages them to be part of the community. Singapore will have more houses built with a wide range of options to suit the elderly occupant, together with a decent caretaker.

  b) Better accessibility
Singapore will be making modifications so as to allow the elderly to access more places so that they can move around with more convenience and this is a form of exercise, which will therefore keep the elderly happy and healthy.

  c) Providing care for seniors
The elderly will have access to various efficient, affordable and easily accessible healthcare and eldercare services addressing all the elderly's different needs, allowing them to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  d) Creating more opportunities
The elderly need to lead healthy lives. For this, they will have buddies and should be involved in community activities. They will be able to socialise more and therefore others will have more positive attitudes towards them.

2) They are going to build a barrier-free environment to allow the elderly to live independently and continue engaging actively in the society. Unhindered access to various places - from homes to public amenities, communal and recreational facilities will be needed for such an enabling environment. It will give them access to the different public transport systems and therefore further benefit the few vehicles that have been adapted to be elderly friendly.

3a) The government will top up the Medisave accounts of the poorer Singaporeans when there are budget surpluses that the government can share with the people. This will help to pay for healthcare costs as Singaporeans depend on their Medisave accounts to meet their healthcare needs in their old age.

b) The elderly should receive care from family physicians as they play an important role in the management of healthcare needs for seniors. This will ensure that the elderly's many needs will be comprehensively taken care of.

4) I can help by helping seniors to cross the road by supporting them, giving up my seat when they come on the bus, or even helping them to pick up things that they drop. I can also go to community centres to talk to them.

Elderly Challenge - Observation 2

Now, some shopping centers are more aware of the elderly's situations and therefore facilitate the elderly with special lifts like this.

These lifts provide more convinience for the elderly and disabled. It gives them more mobility and does not tire them out when they need to move from level to level via the stairs.

That's all for today!

Elderly Challenge - Observation 1

The elderly are sometimes on wheelchairs or walking slowly but we just get impatient and do wrong things out of anger. This is a picture of an old man in a wheelchair with his caretaker. He was having a meal at the Ghim Moh hawker centre, sitting at a special table for the disabled.

After his meal, his caretaker pushes him to a tap near a toilet to wash his hands. This shows that the elderly man depends a lot on his caretaker. Therefore we must be more understanding and know that they need our help. So next time when you see any disabled elderly, instead of getting annoyed, why not help them!

Personal Reflection (NEWater Visit)

1. Importance of conserving water, 3R (Recycle, Reuse & Reduce), 4 national taps (National catchments, Imported water, NEWater, Desalinated water)
2. They are:
i) UV disinfection, which may kill bacteria, but does not remove them.  Therefore reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration are used.
ii) If the process in ultrafiltration were multiplied by a 100 million times, the holes in between the strands will be the size of a tennis ball, water molecules a ping pong ball, virus would be a truck, and bacteria would be as large as the NEWater factory itself.
3. Ultrafiltration is an effective way of filtering harmful substances from water.  It filters all bacteria and most viruses.
4. Reduce usage of water at home like using rain water to water plants, using a mug to brush my teeth instead of running tap and using water drained from the washing machine to wash the floor.

Here are some photos taken during the trip at the NEWater facility:

Week 7: Identifying Bad Designs

A : Bathroom Taps

This photo shows a poorly designed bathroom sink.  The problem arises from the faucet being set too far from the basin’s edge.  Thus, people have a tendency to bump their hands against the edge of the basin when washing.  The easy solution is to either move the faucet closer to the edge of the basin or increase the circumferance of the basin so its edge is closer to the faucet.

B: Can Openers

Can openers are usually designed for right-handed people like this one (above-picture taken by me). Therefore, most left-handers will have to either use the can opener backwards or order a special one suited to them (left- http://www.nalhp.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/kitchen.PNG). A solution to this common problem is to design a can opener that is reversible, to be suited to both right and left-handed people (below-picture taken by me).

Week 6+7: Basic Photography - Theme 'Red'

My theme is Red.  These are the pictures I took during Chinese New Year.

Most of the pictures consist of large amounts of red and some even have a one-point perspective, like the couplets in the third picture.

Sustainable Design

Sustainable design means to produce products that are made only of renewable resources. Hence, products made by sustainable design are meant not to severely impact the environment either when they are in the process of being produced or when they are being used. These products are also typically meant to allow the consumer to feel more related to the natural environment.

Such designs is also known as "environmental design" and "environmentally-conscious design." This kind of a design is just as much a philosophy practice. It is based on finance, ecological, and communal concepts regarding the vitality of sustainability.

Products that are produced from this kind of design range from the tiny to the huge. An example is a tote bag made of recycled products meant to be used in replacement of paper or plastic bags at the supermart. While this common product is small, when folded up, to fit inside of a purse, it is a good example of the philosophy of sustainable design.

Sustainable design can even create massive products like creating buildings, even skyscrapers. As a matter of fact, it can also be used to plan and develop whole cities.

Week 3: Understanding 'Research' (part 1)

It is the searching of information. It helps us to gain knowledge, which is precious , as it may help us to uncover mysteries in life. We can look for sources that have actually experienced what our research is about.

ADMT Lesson 1: Personal Reflection

It is to innovate and create new things that contribute to the department of ADMT.
It is important as the world relies on it heavily. I want to learn animation, starting simple, then getting more sophisticated as I learn more.

It would look very round, and instead of towering skyscrapers, the people would live in mountain caves.
